Origin: An old variety, the origin of which is not certain. Probably it originates from Southern America. Several, slightly different strains have been cultivated in Europe with different names (Purple Congo, Blå Kongo, Blaue Schweden etc.)

Represented in Finland by: The Finnish Seed Potato Centre Ltd. carries out the maintenance and basic seed production.

Characteristics:

Special variety with purple flesh. The colour consists of anthocyanin substances - the same as are found in e.g. blueberries, black currants and - red vine. Tubers are round-oval to long-oval, slightly deep-eyed. Flesh is fairly floury. The variety is moderately late. Susceptible to common scab.
